Why driver monitoring?

According to the Euro NCAP 2025 Roadmap (PDF), more than ninety percent of road accidents are caused by human error. Speeding, driving under the influence, drowsiness, fatigue, and distraction are among the main contributory factors. Sudden incapacitation has become a growing issue as our populations age.


To help prevent these kinds of accidents, vehicle manufacturers are rapidly developing prevention systems that monitor driver state and issue warnings when people show signs of dangerous behavior. First in the EU, these driver monitoring systems (DMSs) will be mandatory on all new vehicles — including buses, trucks, and dangerous goods carriers.

Tobii DMS

Tobii DMS is a modular in-vehicle middleware application built on 20 years of innovation and integration know-how in eye tracking and attention computing to deliver customizable feature signals about driver state in real time.

Tobii DMS Core translates camera images into a stream of core driver-state signals such as a person’s gaze point, how open their eyes are, and their head pose.

Tobii DMS Feature leverages core signals to maintain a status of driver state — determining levels of distraction, drowsiness, and other dangerous behaviors. Customizable feature signals can be generated by combining maximum thresholds for driver states with data from other sensors, such as the speedometer, so that the vehicle can generate appropriate warnings and alerts. Tobii DMS manages driver profiles with FaceID and interfaces with other systems to support additional features developed by third parties or the OEM.

Eye tracking and attention computing

Attention computing is the observation of a person with the aim of determining their current state or intention. While it has been the subject of scientific research for well over a century, the evolution of sensing technologies like eye tracking and attention computing capabilities have made it possible to accurately observe human behavior using discreet devices and translate observations into useful insights.

One of eye tracking’s essential components is an infrared camera placed at a short distance (typically 40-110cm) from the subject. As the camera generates a stream of images, AI and computer vision techniques extract attention attributes of the person such as how often they blink, what they are looking at, for how long, and which way their head is facing.

Eye tracking and attention computing is supported by a range of consumer electronics, including VR headsets, desktops, and laptops, enabling a wide variety of applications such as cognitive load and brain trauma assessment, gaming and esports training, and streaming.
